Facilitation

The Village Project conducts design workshops and Charrrettes that bring people together to plan future projects.

We provide a suitable setting and information resources that enable developers, community decision makers, and citizens to share their desires and concerns in an effort to achieve the best long-term planning and design for their towns and neighborhoods or for a particular parcel of land.
Facilitation Examples:

Weaver Street Market Design Workshop - A community design workshop to solicit citizen input for the design and development of Weaver Street Market's property on West Margaret Lane in downtown Hillsborough, NC

"Crossroads Conversation" Charette - A community design workshop to assist development of an architectural program for the Weaver Street Market Co-op property at 201 N. Greensboro Street in Carrboro, NC.

Design

The Village Project can produce concept plans that demonstrate how walkable community principles can be applied to real places. We have created two 3-D models for Efland and Hillsborough, NC.

Downtown Efland 2030

We have also produced a model and portable display containing text, photographs and concept models illlustrating walkable community forms, as well as highlighting key concepts of this urban form, and the negative impacts of car-dependent suburban development patterns.

Education/Research:

Rural VillageVillages and Countryside: Land Use Alternatives for Orange County - written by members of The Village Project, this 60-page report documents the case for more compact, walkable, transit-supportive urban forms, and illustrates how this form might occur, over time, at specific sites in Orange County.

Advocacy:

International Car Free Day - In 2004 and 2005, The Village Project led the celebration of International Car Free Day in Orange County, NC. In both years, over 1000 people pledged to try new ways of commuting to work.
