Downtown
Efland 2030:
A Walkable Community Concept Plan
The North Carolina Railroad extends from Charlotte
to Morehead City, crossing Orange County from east to west. Efland
is one of many sites along this corridor suitable for the creation
of a transit village. Efland already has a mix of uses and there
is a significant amount of undeveloped land. There are also a number
of commercial buildings in Efland which could be adapted for use
as shops, offices or apartments.
Efland could incrementally be transformed into a traditional
compact community with a vibrant downtown of two- to four- story
buildings, centered around a train station. There would be a variety
of residences within easy walking or biking distance of shops, services,
workplaces, houses of worship and recreation.
Due to its location on the North Carolina Railroad,
Efland could become a transit center for western Orange County,
with frequent train service to towns and cities along the railroad,
and buses to towns and villages not on the railroad. Automobiles
would be a much smaller part of the transportation matrix than they
are at present.
